Suspended Sentence Secured for Client Accused of Drug Importation

IMPORTER OF CANNABIS AVOIDS JAIL

 

On 3rd April 2025, our client SB was sentenced before Preston Crown Court following her guilty plea to importing a substantial quantity of cannabis through Birmingham Airport on 9th December 2023.

She and her co-defendant admitted importing 35.5kg of cannabis into Birmingham from the USA in December 2023. The case concerned an estimated street value exceeding £160,000. Both were detained by Border Force officers after arriving with two suitcases containing the drugs, which had been concealed in heat-sealed packages.

Despite the seriousness of the allegation and the significant role attributed to her within the operation, detailed preparation of the case combined with skilful advocacy resulted in our client avoiding jail and receiving a suspended sentence order.

Through careful instruction-taking and the presentation of expert evidence, we demonstrated that our client had been a vulnerable individual who had been exploited due to her personal circumstances. The court was provided with a thorough mitigation package, which outlined a long-standing history of mental health difficulties, financial pressure and a clear path of rehabilitation.

The sentencing judge accepted that while the offence was serious, the client had made significant progress in the time since the offence and was assessed as having a genuine prospect of rehabilitation.

The court imposed a 20-month custodial sentence, suspended for 18 months, together with 30 rehabilitation activity days and 200 hours of unpaid work.

We are pleased to have secured this outcome in a case where immediate custody was a very real possibility.
