Meet the Team

What is a terrorism related offence?

Terrorism is defined by the Crown Prosecution Service as: “the use or threat of action, both in and outside of the UK, designed to influence any international government organisation or to intimidate the public. It must also be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.” [1]

Terrorism legislation is complex, and every case is different, however the various Terrorism Acts (e.g. Terrorism Act 2000 and Terrorism Act 2006) outline a number of terrorism related offences. Examples include:

It is important to understand that in the UK, a person doesn’t need to actually carry out a terrorist act to be convicted. Planning and assisting in the preparation of a terrorist act are also considered crimes under terrorism legislation.
