What is a terrorism related offence?

Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2000 defines terrorism as the use or threat of certain forms of action where the conduct is designed to influence a government or international governmental organisation, or intimidate the public or a section of the public, and is carried out for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.

The Terrorism Act 2000 and Terrorism Act 2006 create a wide range of terrorism offences, including offences relating to proscribed organisations, terrorist funding, possession or collection of information, encouragement of terrorism and preparation of terrorist acts.

The Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019 also amended and expanded existing terrorism legislation, including offences relating to accessing terrorist material online and entering or remaining in certain designated areas overseas without a reasonable excuse.

It is important to understand that in the UK, a person doesn’t need to actually carry out a terrorist act to be convicted. Planning and assisting in the preparation of a terrorist act are also considered serious crimes under terrorism legislation.
