Defending Charges of CONSPIRACY TO SUPPLY STEROIDS
Conspiracy to supply steroids is a relatively complicated charge, but if you or someone you know has been arrested or are facing these charges, you could be facing serious consequences; if convicted, penalties can include anything from confiscation of assets, an unlimited fine, or up to 14 years in prison, depending on the severity of the charges. Getting the right advice and representation as early as possible is key to giving you the best chance of achieving a good outcome against serious criminal charges.
In the UK, it is possible to legally buy a wide variety of steroids for personal use; they are generally manufactured overseas and are sold under controlled and monitored circumstances. Under UK law however, it is a criminal offence to possess, import or export anabolic steroids with the intention of supplying them to others, no matter what the circumstances.
Draycott Browne’s criminal defence solicitors have over 20 years’ experience of representing people facing charges for drug-related offences, including conspiracy to supply steroids; we have a formidable reputation and a strong track record of achieving success. If you are arrested and need urgent legal representation or advice, contact us as soon as possible – the earlier we begin your defence, the better your overall chances of facing these charges. What are steroids?
Anabolic steroids can increase muscle mass and decrease levels of body fat, and are often used by bodybuilders or athletes to enhance their physical performance or to build up their bodies. They are manufactured drugs that mimic the effects of testosterone and are legal for personal use under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. It is legal to import and export steroids if this is done in person – they cannot be posted or delivered by courier. It is illegal to possess, import or export anabolic steroids if you are supplying or selling them.
The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 outlines some of the well-established and widely known steroids, but as different types of steroids are constantly being manufactured they may not all be listed in the schedule. Some of the most common steroids are categorised as a class C drug. Amphetamines are often used for similar reasons as steroids for their ability to burn fat and raise metabolic rates. Amphetamines are a class B drug, so their possession and misuse is deemed more serious than anabolic steroids.
What is conspiracy to supply steroids?
If it is believed that two or more people are involved in planning to commit a criminal offence, this could constitute a conspiracy. If two or more people make plans to illegally supply steroids, then they can be charged with conspiracy to supply - even if the plan is never carried out.
People can be charged with conspiracy to supply steroids if they have done something that seems legal but could in any way be seen as contributing to the illegal plan – so for example, if it is deemed that you lent a property or a vehicle to someone to be used to enable the importation, buying or selling of steroids, you may equally be charged. Even having a conversation with someone in which you discuss supplying steroids to another person can be enough to face charges – no cash needs to change hands, and in fact, no other action needs to be taken outside of that conversation in order to be found guilty of conspiracy to supply steroids.
With this in mind, it is easy to see how innocent people could be charged with conspiracy charges if they were not aware of what was happening around them. Many defence cases hinge on the ability to prove the extent of your knowledge or involvement, or the lack of it, in the conspiracy. Our experienced defence team will work hard to establish your role in the charges and will seek to mitigate them where possible, with the aim of avoiding prosecution, or minimising the penalties applied if you are found guilty.
What defence is available against a conspiracy to supply steroids charge?
Every case is different, and the defence available to you will depend on the nature of the case and your involvement in it. There are instances where people have been wrongly accused of conspiracy, because their bank accounts or property have been used fraudulently or without their knowledge.
If you believe that you have been wrongly accused, or you dispute your involvement in the crime, it’s crucial that you have a skilled defence team who are able to review your case and scrutinise all of the evidence. We will analyse all of the available evidence from CCTV footage, mobile phone records, financial records and witness statements to prove your innocence and have the case dismissed.
If you accept that you were involved in a conspiracy to supply steroids, our team can offer advice on the best way to mitigate the penalties. We will seek to ensure that your involvement is not overstated and that the drugs in question are accurately valued so that you can get the fairest sentence available to you. Our extensive experience and expert knowledge in this area of the law mean that we offer the best chance of building a robust case and avoid or minimise the possible charges.
What are the penalties for conspiracy to supply steroids?
If you are found guilty of conspiracy to supply steroids, the maximum penalty is 14 years imprisonment, or an unlimited fine. The sentence that you are given will depend on a number of factors, including the extent of your role in the conspiracy, and the scale and value of the drugs involved. The more involved that you are deemed to be, and the higher the value of the steroids, the more serious the penalty will be. This is why it is imperative that you have the best defence available to you, handled by a skilled and experienced criminal defence solicitor.
